A Historic Rollout

On June 30, 1953, the first production Corvette—hand-built in Flint, Michigan—rolled off a makeshift assembly line housed in a converted truck plant. That initial batch totaled 300 Corvettes, each meticulously built and identical: Polo White exteriors, red interiors, wraparound windshields, whitewall tires, and a modest six-cylinder engine with a two-speed automatic transmission.

Scarcity & Surviving Models

Out of the 300 manufactured, only about 183 were sold officially in 1953.Today, estimates suggest that fewer than 200 remain, with some enthusiasts claiming as few as 36 still on the road. This rarity has turned surviving ’53 models into prized collector pieces.

From Entry Price to Multi-Six Figures

Back in 1953, the Corvette listed for $3,513, roughly equivalent to $28,000 in today’s money. Fast‑forward to the present: well‑restored ’53 Corvettes fetch from $200,000 to $400,000 at auction, and top concours-quality models have reached $770,000 or more.

Cool Facts & Innovations

  • The ’53 Corvette was America’s first mass‐produced fiberglass‑bodied car, a revolutionary move inspired by wartime material innovation.

  • Early cars lacked exterior door handles and were opened from the inside—an unconventional feature. They also included one of the earliest tachometers and a parking‑brake warning light, luxe touches at the time.

  • The Corvette name honors fast naval ships—corvettes—while the sleek design was the brainchild of Harley Earl, influenced by European roadsters seen after WWII.

God of all creation,

we thank You for the gift of human hands and hearts,

who build, design, and craft with passion and care.

Today, we remember those who labored

to create not just cars, but symbols of culture and innovation.

Bless the legacy of their work,

and inspire us to honor their spirit of excellence

in all we build and share with the world.
