National Geographic

October 1

National Geographic magazine was first published on October 1, 1888, just nine months after the National Geographic Society was founded in Washington, D.C. Its earliest issues read more like scientific journals than the richly illustrated magazine it became known for. Over the decades, however, National Geographic transformed into a global icon of exploration and storytelling. The magazine pioneered the use of photography to bring the farthest corners of the earth into the hands of readers, introducing generations to cultures, landscapes, and wildlife most would never experience firsthand.

Since that first edition, National Geographic has published well over 1,500 issues, making it one of the longest continuously running magazines in American history. It has featured tens of thousands of articles spanning geography, history, science, and culture, often accompanied by groundbreaking photography that set records for both quality and scope. Its famous yellow border has become a symbol of authority and curiosity worldwide, and its photography archive—spanning millions of images—remains one of the most significant visual records of human history and the natural world. Few publications have managed to combine scholarship, adventure, and artistry with the same enduring influence.

Prayer for Knowledge and Truth

God of wisdom and light, we thank You for the gift of knowledge and for those who dedicate their lives to study, discovery, and the sharing of truth. You have given us minds to question, eyes to see, and hearts to understand. We are grateful for the explorers, scientists, writers, and photographers who open the world to us and help us glimpse the richness of Your creation.

Guide us, Lord, to use what we learn not for pride or gain, but for the good of all. Teach us to apply knowledge in ways that protect the earth, heal divisions, and bring dignity to every culture and every people. May the stories and images we encounter awaken us to the beauty and complexity of this world, reminding us that all creation reflects Your glory.

Strengthen our compassion through truth. When knowledge challenges us, give us humility. When discovery excites us, give us gratitude. And when we face the unknown, give us courage to keep seeking, learning, and walking in the light of Your wisdom.

Amen.
