On May 8, 1962, Oskar Schindler was honored on the Avenue of the Righteous in Jerusalem for saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during World War II.
Schindler didn’t begin his journey as a hero—his motives were originally rooted in profit. But as he witnessed the horrors around him and formed relationships with those he employed, something shifted. Compassion took root. What began as business turned into a mission. He chose to risk everything to protect others—an act of profound sacrifice that echoed the very heart of God’s work.
If you need a story of inspiration, consider watching Schindler’s List. It’s not an easy film—it’s haunting and heavy—but it’s a part of history we must never forget. And while Oskar’s courage is central, he’s not the only example of bravery you’ll see.
God of justice and mercy,
Today we remember Oskar Schindler—who, in a time of terror and in the face of evil,
chose courage over comfort and compassion over silence.
Oscar spent his fortune to save 1,200 others,
bearing witness to the sacred value of every human soul.
Thank You for hearts that refused to turn away.
Thank You for the light they carried in a time of great darkness.
May we too be people who act, even when it costs us something.
May we be faithful in the small moments, and brave in the great ones.
And may Oscar's example remind us that even in history’s darkest chapters,
goodness can rise.
Let his memory stir us to protect the vulnerable, defend the innocent,
and never forget the power of one person—guided by conscience and grace—
to change the world.
Amen.
Reflection Questions
Think of a time you were pushed into being courageous. What pushed you to act? How did you feel after the fact?
Did that act make you stronger the next time you found yourself in a challenging situation?
On May 9, 1964, the Beatles were finally knocked out of the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100—a position they had dominated for months.
During their historic run, the Fab Four:
Scored three consecutive #1 singles
Held all five spots in the top five during early April
Had an incredible 14 songs in the Top 100 by mid-April
All three of these achievements remain Billboard records.
But what’s most surprising is who dethroned them: Jazz legend Louis Armstrong, who claimed the #1 spot with his hit “Hello, Dolly!”
You may also know Armstrong for his iconic rendition of “What a Wonderful World.”
Let us pray…
A Prayer for the Gift of Music
God of joy and harmony,
We thank You for the gift of music—
for melodies that lift our spirits,
rhythms that move our bodies,
and lyrics that speak what words alone cannot express.
Thank You for the songs that bring comfort in sorrow,
for the tunes that celebrate love and life,
and for the sounds that unite us across time, place, and culture.
We are grateful for the artists and musicians who use their gifts to create beauty in the world.
Bless them with inspiration, discipline, and joy in their craft.
May music always remind us of Your creativity,
Your presence in our celebrations,
and Your peace in our stillness.
Let us never take for granted the power of a song
to heal, to connect, and to give voice to the soul.
Amen.

On May 11, 1910, the U.S.Congress introduced a bill to designate the northwestern region of Montana as a national park. On this day, President William Howard Taft signed that bill into law, officially establishing Glacier National Park as part of the United States National Park System.
The park spans over 1 million acres (4,100 km²), encompassing parts of two mountain ranges—both sub-ranges of the Rocky Mountains. It features more than 130 named lakes, over 1,000 species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals.
This vast and pristine ecosystem is the heart of what’s known as the “Crown of the Continent Ecosystem”—a protected region covering approximately 16,000 square miles (41,000 km²).
Let us pray…
A Prayer for Preserved Lands and Sacred Spaces
Creator of mountains, rivers, skies, and soil,
We thank You for the beauty of the natural world
—for wild places untouched by concrete, for still waters that reflect Your peace, and for towering
peaks that remind us of Your majesty.
Today we give thanks for the wisdom, however imperfect, that moved hearts and hands to protect what You created—to set aside land not for profit, but for preservation; not for conquest, but for wonder.
We praise You for every acre kept wild, for every ecosystem allowed to thrive, and for the vision
to protect these sacred spaces from the endless sprawl of human habitations.
Forgive us for the harm we’ve done to the earth.
Teach us to live not as owners, but as caretakers.
And help us pass on to future generations not just knowledge, but reverence—for the gift of creation that still speaks of You.
Amen.
